The Eternal Well

1-10-10

John 4:3-5

He left Judea and departed again to Galilee. But He needed to go through Samaria. So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.(NKJV)

To go through Samaria was the most direct route to Galilee.

Jesus had a need to go through Samaria because there was a woman there He needed to talk to.

John 4:6-7

Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink."(NKJV)

This was a well for public use---

Jesus having traveled from Judea was tired and sat by the well.

The Lord of Glory---the eternal well---sitting by a well.

The well is a figure of Himself and its water an emblem of the salvation that is found in Him

Isaiah 12:3

Therefore with joy you will draw water From the wells of salvation.(NKJV)

((Sixth hour))  It was noon time---not many people would be at the well.

Some commentaries say this well was about a mile from dwelling places.

A woman from Samaria comes to draw water.---why at noon and why so far away.

The sixth hour also refers to her spiritual condition—the number six representing man in the flesh.

Maybe shunned by other women

Her object is to draw water.

Jesus says give me a drink   He is asking for a drink from one of the worst people in the city.

So many times God does something to draw our attention to Him.

While at the same time we have a water pot to fill.

I believe His request for a drink must have been two-fold.

His natural thirst but also refreshment He found in ministering His grace to poor needy sinners.

John 4:34

Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.(NKJV)

Let’s see how the woman responds/

John 4:9

Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.(NKJV)

This was said in kind of a scoffing way.

You Jews don’t have anything to do with us Samaritans.

We may run into the same attitude sharing the good news.

How does Jesus respond?

John 4:10

Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."(NKJV)

Christ in the Old testament as explained in Isaiah 9:6 was the gift of God.

In other words if you knew who I am--you would have asked me and I would have given you living water.

What if we really had a revelation of the greatness of possibilities---we would ask for help and receive.

((my own water pot))     to be filled with the thing I think I need the most

The woman at the well is alone with Jesus.    -----Sometimes a place we need to be.

The woman is full of questions of why---and so are we.

Questioning God-----not realizing that the fullness is in Him and not what I am going to fill my water pot with.

John 4:11-12

The woman said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?"(NKJV)

The woman was more concerned with something to draw with that she was with Christ.

Her own efforts rather than the provision of Christ.

We might think the poor thick headed Samaritan woman

although many times we reason what the word of God has spoken and never receive the fullness of promise.

The greatness of God in all its sweetness and tenderness is unfolding to our view and we reply with but how God.

Intent on filling our water pot by natural means

Some with self-righteousness

Some with gossip

Some with un-forgiveness

Self-pity

Anger-----resentment

Pride and self-exaltation

Colossians 2:10

and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.(NKJV)

Even being confronted with the reality of this verse we still have arguments and questions just like the Samaritan woman

John 4:13-14

Jesus answered and said to her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."(NKJV)

Jesus Christ offers living water---salvation springing up into everlasting life

The things we fill our water pot with help for a little while.

Self completion never works.

It doesn’t work with salvation and it doesn’t work is satisfying the longing of your soul.

John 4:15

The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw."(NKJV)

Maybe she didn’t fully understand what Jesus is talking about but she is willing to receive.

God quench the thirsting of my soul so I won’t have to come here and draw again.

Exodus 2:15

When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh and dwelt in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well.(NKJV)

What does this verse have to do with the woman at the well?

Whenever we run into trouble we run to the well.

Jesus has the answer to every situation in your life.

After the woman perceives who Jesus is the subject is set directly on worship.

Realizing that He has the answer and we don’t naturally leads us to the place where we find our place at the feet of Jesus.

Anything less is a stubborn rebellion neglecting to give Him His rightful place in our lives.

Jesus says they that worship should worship in spirit and in truth for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.

True worship as opposed to external rites and ceremonies

Worship is giving God something He did not create.

He made it possible but He did not manufacture it----You do

God is not mad as you---He is wanting to help you.

John 4:28-29

The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, "Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"(NKJV)

When we have this kind of encounter with God we will leave our waterpot.

Regardless of all the confusion, trials and tribulations Jesus Christ is the answer.

Regardless of all our doubts and fears Jesus Christ is the answer.

Regardless of all of the hurt Jesus Christ is the answer.

We aren’t allowed to add our container of fixes to His---we allow Him to complete us His way.

Isaiah 55:1-2

"Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price. Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And let your soul delight itself in abundance.(NKJV)

Every time we try to do it by natural means Christ is right there offering the better way.

Will we allow Jesus Christ to show us a better way?

Take Him up on His offer.
