Imputed Righteousness

Righteousness -   The condition acceptable to God.  The doctrine concerning the way in which man may attend a state approved of God

There is only one righteous one.   Jesus made full satisfaction for your sin.

How did we receive His righteousness

Justification

How does the bible say we have received His righteousness

Romans 3:28                     man is justified by faith

Romans 5:1                       Being justified by faith

Romans 9:30                     righteousness is by faith

Romans 5:9                       Being not justified by His blood

Romans 10:4                     For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to

                                           everyone who believes

Under the law one transgression cancelled your right standing before God.

Galatians 2:16

knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.(NKJV)

Not justified by the works of the law

Justified by faith in Jesus Christ

By the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

Isaiah 64:6 says our righteousness is as filthy rags

our best efforts----- are not fit to appear before God.

James 2:24

You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.(NKJV)

Some people take this our of context

Works not as a cause procuring or producing our righteousness but as effects declaring it.

Works will automatically follow true genuine faith.

We are justified-----made righteous by faith and His blood.      Period

How long do we have His righteousness?

Can we loose His imputed righteousness?

How do we maintain our right standing before God.

In this story this man lost his righteousness because of a sin of un-forgiveness

If we accept this as truth we have to conclude that every sin we commit will have the same effect.

If we loose our righteousness  We also loose--

The gift of eternal life

The Holy Spirit stops living inside of us.

We are no longer heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ.

We are no longer His children

Communication to God is cut off through prayer.

Our own righteousness in performing the law as a means of holding on to our righteousness.

Does your salvation leak out if you sin?

Ephesians 1:13-14

In Him you also who have heard the Word of Truth, the glad tidings (Gospel) of your salvation, and have believed in and adhered to and relied on Him, were stamped with the seal of the long-promised Holy Spirit. That [Spirit] is the guarantee of our inheritance [the firstfruits, the pledge and foretaste, the down payment on our heritage], in anticipation of its full redemption and our acquiring [complete] possession of it--to the praise of His glory.(AMP)

What this story is suggesting is that we maintain our place in God based on our good living.

The works of the law as a basis to maintain our right standing before God.

If our righteousness came by faith in Jesus Christ we keep His gift of righteousness by continued faith in Him.

This story reflects pure legalistic thinking.

Legalism means strict adherence to the law as a means of providing or retaining salvation.

It suggest an adding to the work of Jesus Christ.----something I can do to retain favor with God.

If we believe this everything we have received is gone.

Let’s say we confess and ask for forgiveness---then everything comes back.

Or maybe we think because of an accumulation of different sins then we loose our right standing before God.

Sin---an offence against God. A violation of the law of God.

Some may say how bad can a Christian sin?

Sins

Lack of integrity             Lack of faithfulness           Cruel Speech

Racism                        Neglecting the poor               Self-Centeredness

Addictions                  Bigotry                                   Boastful

Causing dissension    Conceit                                   Covetousness

Critical tongue          Envy                                         prejudice

False modesty            Fear                                         Gluttony

Greediness                 Hatred                                     Hostility

Lust                            Idolatry                                   Impure thoughts

Indifferent to others   Jealousy                                  Laziness

Materialistic               Negativism                              Passivity

Profanity                     Gossip                                     Rebellion to authority

Resentment                 Self-Indulgence                       Self-sufficiency

Un-forgiveness            Stubbornness                          Ill-tempered

Pride                             Arrogance                              Worry

Bitterness                     Impatience                              Lying

Whining                        Complaining                          Arguing

Excuse-making              Stealing                                 Cheating

Is it possible to commit a sin and not even realize it?   yes

How about the things that God urged you to that you didn’t do?

It’s totally unrealistic to think that we live up to legal requirements in order to maintain our good standing before God.

Romans 3:20

Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.(NKJV)

If our original justification at salvation was bas on faith and His blood sacrifice then our continued justification and right stand are on the same basis.

Romans 8:2

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.(NKJV)

Under the old covenant there was the law of sin and death.

Without Jesus Christ we are under the law of sin and death.

Your righteousness can never be maintained by your good performance.

Let’s read about the Pharisees.

Luke 6:7

So the scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him.(NKJV)

Let’s see if He is going to do something against the law.

What is the pharisaical spirit?

It starts with though that you probably are better in performance than most people.

I’m better than those that don’t show forth the same giftings.

I’m more spiritual than some of these other people

I’m better than those that just sit in church and bow their heads

It seeks places of leadership, not of service.

A place of recognition rather than a quiet closet of prayer

Quick to point out the sins and faults others while neglecting to deal with their own sin.

Noticing the speck in other people’s eyes and neglecting the beam in their own eyes.

Quick to jump on weak young Christians pointing out their weaknesses.

Pharisees are more interested in enforcing the law in someone’s life rather than allowing the Holy Spirit to perform the work in that person’s heart

A self-righteous attitude looking in disgust on most everyone else’s behavior.

The Pharisees of Jesus time were interested in trapping Jesus in things that He did.

If we would revisit this list of sins there are plenty of things we all have to work on.

The real issue is with the heart.  Not your performance percentage.

(((delighting in the law in the inward man)))

You will never be good enough to retain your salvation.

It came by grace through faith and you retain it by grace through faith.

Col 1:23    continuing in faith not moved away from the hope of the gospel.

If we are justified by faith------we are continually justified by faith.

Romans 12:1

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.(NKJV)

But with what motivation-----

A fire insurance policy  -----or out of love and adoration to God

The first motivation is based on fear and not on love.

Romans 6:1-4

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.(NKJV)

We have been freed from the domination and controlling influence of sin

I asked this question before.    If eternity life wasn’t available would you still worship, serve and be obedient to Him.  ----Our answer is yes!

Remember that true faith work result in works.

To think that our performance to whatever acceptable level somehow retains our good standing with God is adding to the work of Jesus Christ.
